Shed Foundation Construction

Anytime you are going to build a shed you have to think about the shed foundation construction.  All structures are built from the ground up and your shed is no different.  There are many options and they depend on where the shed will be located and what type of soil you have and your budget.  One thing you do not want to do is build it directly on the ground as the moisture may rot the wood and also the shed may lean from ground settling.

Shed Foundation Construction Types

Wood and Pier…

wood and pier shed foundation constructionThis shed foundation is good depending on the location and type of shed you build.  It is also considered to be a post and beam foundation because the wood is not just sitting on the ground but it is attached to posts that are secured in the ground.  The wood has to be pressure treated to withstand the moisture.  Furthermore, posts are to be secured properly at the right depth for the weight of your structure so you do not have a leaning shed.

Gravel…

gravel shed foundation constructionA shed foundation of gravel is good for a small to medium shed.  It is a sturdy foundation and can withstand heavy loads if you are putting equipment in your shed, but they are not the best for large sheds.  A large shed that holds equipment should be on a concrete slab.  Dig a hole the size of the shed and then put the gravel in the hole.  It will need to be leveled and tamped down to make a secure foundation.  The shed is then attached with pegs or auger anchors.

Cement Blocks…

cement block shed foundation constructionThese blocks make for an easy alternative for a shed foundation because they are readily available and can be delivered to your site.  They are spaced at 3-5 feet apart and the shed is built right on top of the blocks.  Level the blocks so you do not have a leaning shed and a  poor foundation.  Cement blocks are easy to move and if you have a small shed and want to move it at some point.  This might be a good alternative for future mobility of your shed.

Concrete Slab…

concrete slab shed foundation constructionThis is the strongest shed foundation construction and can withstand a full load contact.  It is a great foundation for sheds with machinery.  Therefore, if your shed is for equipment or a car then this is the one you want.  With the concrete slab, you do have to be careful if the slab is much larger than your shed.  If that is the case, then you run the risk of water resting on the slab and therefore rotting your shed.  So, you should try to get the slab and shed at the same dimensions.

Shed Foundation Construction Conclusion…

In conclusion, these are the basic common types of shed foundations for your structure.  As you prepare to build your structure you need to make sure you have a good set of plans.  The plans will make all the difference in building your structure on a firm foundation.

woodworking jigsThird, the router jig is used for supporting and guiding the wood when it moves through the saw. Therefore, it gets a very smooth and regular cut. Furthermore,  the router jig can be used to give the wood an artistic look. They are widely used for creating edges of tabletops, drawer faces, etc.

woodworking jigsFourth, the Tenon jig is used for guiding table saws.  They can be set to different angles that allow for specific cuts of wood. These jigs are clamped on wood and they will guide the saw to make a smooth and straight cut.

Firewood Shed Designs

All firewood shed designs have similar pearls for building the firewood shed right.

Firewood Shed Designs – The Costs…

Firewood comes with a cost whether you bought it or chopped it yourself.  You either shelled out your hard earned money or you spent a lot of time and energy chopping wood. So if your firewood becomes filled with moisture, then all your money and efforts will just go down the drain.  Wet firewood will not burn properly and if you live in an area with a lot of rain and snowfall, then it is impossible to keep firewood dry.  Building a firewood shed is the key to this problem and you can be sure of having dry firewood every time you need it.

Firewood Shed designs 1

Firewood Shed Designs- The Location…

The location of your firewood shed is one of the most important decisions you can make, therefore it should be away from water but near your home.  You certainly wouldn’t want to walk a long distance to get some firewood when it’s raining or heavy snowfall.  Firewood Shed designs 2

Firewood Shed Designs- The Plans…

Most firewood sheds are built with only three sides. Only three walls are provided and the fourth side is left open. This is necessary for access and airflow which in turn allows the firewood to dry properly.  However, with an open side, it could allow rain and snow to be blown inside by the wind.  Therefore the open side should not face the direction of the wind.

Firewood Shed Designs- Roof and Floor…

With regards to the roof of your firewood shed, you should make sure it has a high steep and slanted roof. The snow and rain will easily slide off and not get inside to the firewood. This goes the same for the foundation, making it higher from the ground and providing a slant to slide snow and water away from the firewood.  Also, try to build a raised floor so that moisture from the ground won’t seep inside the shed.

To further prevent moisture from seeping into your firewood,  put a layer of plastic on the floor for barrier protection.  You should stack your firewood on off-cut lumbers to provide air flow underneath the wood for drying and it will also keep moisture away.

Firewood Shed designs 3

Firewood Shed Designs- Finally…

Most firewood sheds are easy to make and don’t typically cost as much as the typical storage shed. With just a couple of boards and nails, you can be assured that you will have dry firewood ready to build a roaring fire.  Always remember that in starting any project, having plans is the best way to ensure that you will have a worry-free time when you are in the actual process of building. So get your hands on a good firewood shed plan first.

To Build A Shed Or Not?

To Build A Shed or Not to Build A Shed?  That is the Question

The need to have a shed cannot be stressed enough. Many households today are being overwhelmed with their belongings taking up too much space.   It is difficult to decide what to throw away, donate, or sell. If you decide to keep some of those belongings, then where do you store them?  Typically in the attic or to the garage in most cases, which still causes clutter.

To Build A Shed…

lean to shed
Build A Shed – Lean To Shed

The sure fire way of clearing up space is to build a shed, for your tools, your garden equipment or your mementos. Whether you decide to buy or build a shed is by  far the most important question.  If you do decide to build it yourself, then kudos to you because building a shed is one of the simplest tasks in basic carpentry.

If you have a great command using tools and have a free weekend or two to work on measuring, hammering, cutting, drilling and sawing, then all you need are the proper materials, tools and building plans.  The beauty of creating your own shed from scratch is that you will be able to customize your design and allow it to directly cater to all your storage needs. Not only will you have a functional structure on your property but you will also have a source for great pride and joy.

Not To Build A Shed…

On the flip side, if you have never even built a stool from scratch or even a simple paper weight, then a shed could be difficult.  This case though is not hopeless. If you have the extra money, then by all means buy yourself a shed.  There are many options out there and you can find some ideas on my previous post, The Lawn Shed

There are many great options for buying including materials such as plastic, metal, fabric and others.  However, some of these plans are not very sturdy and you could possibly waste some money on something that collapses in the first storm.  Check the sturdiness of the shed before you buy so you do not waste time and money.

Finally…

But because you’re reading this, it’s highly likely that you plan to build a shed yourself. To make sure that you don’t build an eyesore or a hazard in your own yard, you then need to know that as a beginner you will need a good set of detailed and comprehensive plans.

The best thing about purchasing or downloading a set of shed plans is that, there are so many design options already available today. You will need to do some research on which plan fits the design of your house and meets your needs for storage.  Two options are to buy a kit that has the plans and all the materials included or to buy a set of plans that has a complete materials list and then go out and buy everything on the list and follow the plan.

The Plans…

shed plan
Build A Shed Plan

I prefer to get the plan, buy the materials and then follow the plan.  I have put together kits before and some will lack material or a part breaks.  Then you need to go back to the company that sold it to you to get what you need which delays the process.  With a good set of plans you can buy the material and if something happens you just go back to the store and buy the right board or nail that you need.

Whichever you choose, you can be assured that you will have a great time building your shed and also have the self satisfaction that knowing that that shed was created by you.

Shed Reasons?

There are many reasons to have a shed for your home.   Whether you buy or build the home of your dreams there will always be one area of your life that you desperately need and that is more space.  There are multiple reasons you need more space and of course your reasons are yours but here is a list of a few.shed picture

A Few Reasons For A Shed:

New Hobby:  You get a new hobby and before you know it you are busting out at the seems with no room for your new stuff.  So adding a little extra room to the garage by building a shed and moving the lawn equipment in there will free up a lot of space for your new hobby.

Gardening:  Maybe you are taking up gardening or already have an existing garden and you do not want to have to carry everything out to the garden just to bring it back to the garage, so place a shed near the garden and you have everything right at your finger tips.

Man Cave: Or maybe you want a man cave away from the house so it doesn’t bother the family and give you a place to have the guys over for a night of football, drinks, etc…

Tools: Your garage can only hold so much and if you are a person with many tools and not much room to store them or for that matter use them in one specific area over and over then you may need a nice shed for the tools and one that is big enough for workspace.

Kids: If you have kids and then they may want a playhouse, so many shed ideas are big enough to make a nice playhouse for the kids and also to store their outdoor toys.

Shed Reasons? – Your Plan…

Once you decide on “your reason” for a shed or structure then you need to figure out if you are handy enough to build the structure.  Or  do you have someone else build it for you.  Whatever your decision there are a few things to consider.  Cost and time are the two factors to think about.  If you are a person that has the resources and need something quick then you should buy a shed.

Shed Reasons? – Should You Build..

However, if you have at least some limited skills on building things and repairing things then you should build your own shed.  I know it sounds tough but it really isn’t if you have the right plans and tools for the job.  There are many professional plans on the market that you will pay top dollar for but there are also many easy to read and follow plans.  Kind of like paint by number, but with boards and nails.

If you are serious about getting a shed for your home, then check out all of the different options.  Make a decision for buying what you want, having someone build your shed or just taking a weekend and doing it yourself.  You will be amazed and what an addition they can make to your lifestyle and home.

Shed Door Options

JB here and a new post on shed door options.  Depending on your shed style you can have many different types of shed doors with some of the doors being very elaborate while some are basic doors.  The doors are most commonly made from different materials including wood and metal.  There are many styles of doors and some options include basic doors, sliding doors or even like a garage door.

Not for sure which door you need for your shed?  It really depends on the purpose and style of your shed.   For example, if you have a shed for lawn equipment then you may want a wide open doorway like a dual opening door.  However, if you have a shed that is like a man cave then a regular door with a lock would be preferred.

Types of Common Shed Door Options:

Basic Shed Door Options.  This is exactly the way it sounds.  A basic door with hinges.  One of the easiest doors to install.  You can even build your own door if you are handy enough.  They come in all sizes and shapes and are custom to your opening.  You can have wood or metal.

Shed Door options

Sliding Shed Door Options:  These doors are nice to maximize your floor space because these doors slide open on a track so no part of the door swings into your floor space.   With extra floor space you have more options in what you can do in your shed.  Sliding doors are built with different materials including wood and glass so there are many options finding the one you want for your shed.

Sliding Shed Door options

Dual Opening Shed Door Options: These doors open up together or one at a time.  Very useful for sheds with lawn equipment or if you need a really large doorway to get any other equipment in or out of the shed.

Dual Open Shed Door options

Roll Up Shed Door Options:  This is basically a garage door for your shed and looks really cool.  You can find out how to build this in your shed at one of my previous posts.  This door is locked and secured easily so it adds to the security of your shed.  Therefore these doors are just like the doors on a storage shed that one would pay a monthly fee to secure their belongings.  They allow maximum floor space for storage but may not be the best door if you are going to do some work in your shed.

Roll Up Shed Door options

Now you know the basics of shed doors so you can get creative and find the right door for your shed.

Shed Shelving and Storage

JB here and welcome to my post about shed shelving and storage. Thought I would write an article in regards to shelving.  Once you have the shed built you will definitely need some shelving to organize the contents. The shelves you need will really depend on the contents of your shed. For instance, if you built a shed for a man cave then you will need different shed shelving as compared to a shed for lawn equipment.  There are many different types of shelves.  Read more to find out the differences.

Shed Shelving and Storage- Here are some examples:

Ceiling shelves.  This shelf is installed in the ceiling of the shed and hangs down over top of the floor space. Most people put bulky objects in this type of shelf because it will free up floor space.

shed shelving and storage

Professional looking cabinets. These cabinets can be either store-bought or custom-made to your needs. They are at Home Depot, Lowe’s and Amazon. There is a typical garage look to them and are very useful if your shed is going to be something for woodworking or projects.  Perfect for a Man Cave.

shed shelving and storage kit

Basic wire rack.  I am not sure this one needs much explanation. It is basically a standing rack that allows you to put on various objects.  They are further organized with plastic bins to keep everything nice and tidy.  Cost effective, inexpensive and very versatile cabinets.

Handmade Wooden Shed Shelving and Storage.  If you are a woodworker you can build these shelves yourself. You can customize them with different drawers and cabinets. You can find them at many different wood shops and furniture stores. They are a nice addition if your shed is going to be upscale.

Plastic Shed Shelving and Storage. This too is a very inexpensive shelving system. They are at the local department store or Amazon. Basically, you build these shelves in varying heights as they are extremely inexpensive and are probably the most used shelving system in garages and sheds.

Hanging Shed Shelving and Storage.  These shelves attach to your wall with typically a metal bracket. The shelf itself can be either wood or a wire rack. Depending on the material they can increase the cost of your shelving. There are also elongated hanging racks that are used for lawn equipment such as rakes, shovels, and brooms.

Find the right shed shelving for your shed by actively evaluating your needs. Take these suggestions and use them in your house or garage.  You can find all of these things on Amazon or your local department store.

The first few videos are the basics of the foundation.  Then the walls are built and erected.  The roof is built quick and easy and then you can see it all come together.  Finally, the door is a roll-up door which is a nice door for security.  I liked the vinyl exterior and the size of the shed he built.  Which is good for security and storage.   Plans like this are everywhere so find a set of plans and get started.  Make sure you get lots of plans to review so you are not limited.  Check out the collection of plans at the end of the post and you can get started today.
