The best shed roofing material is one that suits the roof’s pitch, structural design, weather exposure and maintenance needs—not simply the cheapest covering on the shelf. Asphalt shingles, metal panels and EPDM rubber can each work well in the right assembly. Cedar and clay or concrete tile require their own design and installation details.

Check these four things before choosing a covering
- Roof pitch: measure rise over horizontal run. A 3:12 roof rises 3 inches in 12 inches of run. Match the actual pitch to the exact product, not just the material category.
- Structure: verify the complete roof weight, snow and wind loads, framing and connections. A covering change can require design changes.
- Exposure: consider wind-driven rain, snow, falling branches, nearby salt exposure and shade. Ask the supplier which assembly and finish suit your site.
- Shed use: an unheated tool shed and an insulated workshop need different moisture-control planning. Choose the ventilation and insulation approach with the roof system.

Asphalt shingles: a familiar finish for suitable slopes
Asphalt shingles are worth comparing when you want the shed to complement a shingle-roofed home. Three-tab and architectural shingles have different appearances and product specifications. Color is only one decision: check the approved deck, slope, underlayment, wind rating and installation instructions.


GAF’s low-slope application bulletin addresses slopes from 2:12 up to, but not including, 4:12. Special underlayment provisions apply; consult the instructions for the chosen shingle. Do not use asphalt shingles below their approved minimum slope or assume extra sealant makes an unsuitable pitch acceptable.
Include starter materials, ridge caps, flashing, edge metal and ventilation components in the estimate. Budget for inspection and repair of damaged or displaced shingles. Matching an older roof’s color can be difficult, so keep the product information and a small supply of suitable spare materials.
Metal roofing: choose a system, not just a sheet

Metal roofing includes exposed-fastener panels and concealed-fastener or standing-seam systems. They are not interchangeable. Each profile has requirements for slope, supports, laps, clips or screws, sealants and trim. Some systems use solid decking; others are designed for specified spaced supports.
The variation is important: MBCI lists a 1/2:12 minimum for its PBR panel, while its Slimline manual specifies a 3:12 minimum. These are product examples, not permissions to use any metal sheet at those slopes. The complete installation conditions still apply.
Get a quote that includes edge and ridge trim, closures, fasteners, sealants, delivery and any required deck or support changes. Inspect exposed-fastener systems for loose or deteriorated fasteners and washers as directed by the manufacturer. Avoid incompatible metals and protect finishes during cutting and handling.
Metal does not eliminate condensation. Plan the underside of the assembly for the shed’s climate and use; a wet ceiling is not automatically a leaking panel seam. Long panels also need a safe handling plan, especially in wind.
EPDM rubber: a low-slope option with critical edge details

EPDM is a roofing membrane, not simply a waterproof sheet to glue over any surface. A properly specified system can suit a low-slope shed, but it still needs drainage, a suitable substrate and correctly detailed seams, edges, corners and penetrations.
Use compatible membrane, adhesive, primer, seam products and flashing from the specified system. Carlisle’s EPDM resources provide product and installation information. Adhesive compatibility and application conditions are product-specific; do not substitute general-purpose glue or assume a bonding adhesive also seals a seam.
A small roof may permit fewer seams, but the perimeter still needs careful work. Include termination details and drainage components in the price. Protect the membrane from punctures and use compatible repair materials. If you cannot confidently execute the edge and penetration details, get a qualified low-slope roofer’s quote.
Cedar shingles and shakes: appearance with specific upkeep

Cedar can suit a garden setting, but shingles and shakes are different products with different installation requirements. Their exposure, spacing, underlayment or interlayment, fasteners and roof-deck arrangement must suit the selected product and slope. Asphalt-shingle experience does not make these details interchangeable.
Use the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau’s installation resources and manufacturer instructions. Check applicable fire requirements and any insurer restrictions before choosing wood roofing. Budget for inspection, debris management and product-appropriate maintenance; avoid treatments or cleaning methods that the supplier does not recommend.
Clay and concrete tile: check the structure first
Clay and concrete tile are separate from cedar roofing. A tile roof can impose substantially different loads from the covering originally planned for a lightweight shed. Have the framing, bearing supports and foundation checked for the actual specified assembly before committing to it.
Tile also needs compatible underlayment, flashing, attachment and edge details for the site. Consult the Tile Roofing Industry Alliance’s installation guides and the tile manufacturer. Treat this as a specialist roofing decision, not a simple substitute for nailing asphalt shingles.
Compare total installed cost, not a price per bundle
There is no universal cheapest option for every shed. Obtain comparable local quotes for the same measured roof area and scope. A low covering price can be offset by deck changes, trim, delivery, waste or labor.
- Measure the sloped roof area, including the planned overhangs—not just the shed floor area.
- Include decking or repairs, underlayment, flashing, fasteners, caps, vents and drainage details.
- Account for laps, cuts, waste and product coverage; do not assume nominal panel width equals installed coverage.
- For replacement work, include removal, disposal and any required inspections.
- Compare maintenance needs, warranty exclusions and who is responsible for installation defects.
Do not treat a warranty term as a guaranteed roof lifespan. Installation quality, exposure, maintenance and the condition of the deck all affect performance.
Common shed-roofing questions
Can I put new roofing over the old covering?
Only if the selected system, existing structure and applicable requirements allow it. Inspect the deck first. Covering rot or a sagging roof does not repair it, and extra layers add load. Ask a roofer to assess an uncertain roof before ordering materials.
Is the roof covering enough to stop every leak?
No. Flashing, seams, edges and penetrations are frequent places to investigate, and condensation can resemble a leak. Diagnose the water source before coating the roof with sealant. Start with our shed repair guide if the existing shed needs attention.
Which material should I choose for a nearly flat shed roof?
Start by measuring the slope and checking drainage. Ask for a complete system approved for those conditions, often a purpose-designed low-slope membrane assembly. Do not assume ordinary shingles or a generic corrugated panel will work.
